I've always felt I had a love for animals but I really don't know if I consider a goose an animal. Their brain must be the size of a peanut because they go nuts anytime anything comes around them.
Every few weeks I pass by this flock. They put on a show, honking their nasally vocals at deafening decibels, spreading their wings and flapping furiously. Though I don't see them doing it I am sure they are putting down deposits all over the place. They stretch their necks straight and open their eyes wide letting anyone or anything close to them know that they are the boss and the area belongs to them. Anyone with any brain at all would give them a wide berth. They all seem to hang together 24/7. It's almost like they are having a union meeting all day long. Strength in numbers is what this flock is all about. Just like a union, it can't get anything done if it's membership is low.
Thinking myself savvy in barnyard ways of domestic animals, what would I do in case of an attack? Surely the best way to handle one of these charging watch birds would be to grab the most offensive goose by the neck and have an eye to eye, heart to heart with him. That would get his attention enough that he would report back to his union that I was not something to be messed with. The truth of the matter is I have not given this flock a chance to attack me. I stay in my truck when I am around them. My white truck is my best defense. These geese must think it's a white goose so big that their bullying would have little effect so they just retreat to a more defensive part of the barn yard.
It has been over thirty years since I have owned a domestic animal of any kind and even then it was man's best friend. The closest I ever came to a goose was the one my Dad shot and Mom cooked. It was terrible tasting and I knew then I did not like geese, my opinion has not changed.
Great article !! And what a great picture...and by the way they animals have NEVER attacked anyone.
