Windy Flashback

Once again it is hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Ike was expected to make landfall around the Corpus Christi Texas area late Friday as a category 3 storm with it's projected path sending it through the Central TX area with hurricane force winds and heavy rain. Ike's landfall location and projected path has changed and will now hit the Houston TX area. Only one category 5 hurricane in my lifetime has taken a path through Central Texas, that being Hurricane Carla on Sept 11, 1961. I had just had my 9th birthday when Carla came roaring through my small Central Texas town. You can read my memories of Hurricane Carla in a piece I wrote about the 2004 hurricane season. In Master Storm I describe just how powerful Carla was and some of the events in my small town during the storm's fury.

Went back and read your story on Carla. This time our sister has been in the path of the destruction. She is lucky in many, many ways, but did have some damage. Just say prayers for all those in need.

    Galveston Texas...September 8, 1900

A massive hurricane devastated the Island of Galveston. At that point in time it was the fourth largest city in Texas.
An estimated 6,000 died and more than 3,600 buildings were destroyed.

I thank GOD I live in the woods of Minerva ,Texas. And pray for all those in harm's way.
