Most of us rather true or not, believe we are compassionate. It's debatable whether or not we are born with that trait but compassion usually starts showing signs during our early religious training. All religions encourage compassion, teaching us to help anyone in distress. But I'll admit my compassion hinges on my attitude at any given moment. Sometimes the compassion in myself needs to be awakened or even pushed a little.
When something or someone is not living up to my expectations I am all too fast to fly off to the land of "Me Myself and I". Such a flight usually takes place when I see a homeless person standing on the street begging for money. The loss of personal self worth, the loss of basic needs, not knowing where the next meal or shirt is coming from or something as simple as where they are going to sleep that night seems to be far for my vision. What I really see is that they have not met expectations. Flawed thinking want's to know why the homeless can't pick themselves up by their bootstraps and have a normal life. Such resentful thinking will be my downfall someday so dealing with my so call compassion is a must.
Therefor believing compassion is truly about caring for all our neighbors, homeless or not is a must. Compassion can be challenging at times but it can usually be achieved with an attitude of gratitude and that's something I have in abundance. So maybe compassion is easier than I thought.
I think the old saying goes like this.

There are no rules to love, except to love. Brother, can you spare some time?
