Political Beliefs

Politics divides us all.  We can't seem to get along with the other political party's beliefs.  Our beliefs are formed early in life and by our 30s our political beliefs are deeply entrenched.  Those beliefs are defended in the face of overwhelming counter-evidence.  When we challenge someone on the other side of the political fence our own personal identity is also challenged.  We feel threatened if they don't agree with our political beliefs.  When presented with rational  evidence that goes against what we believe in we either shut down or disregard it and then increase the convictions in our beliefs.
Why is it so hard to change a person's mind with clear cut evidence and persuadable argument?  I guess our political beliefs are part of our personal identity.  I am no different than a lot of other Americans who struggle to find their way in a Trump world.  Last weekend I found myself protesting in the streets of downtown Austin Texas.  Was I disappointed in the election of Mr Trump?  Hell Yes I sure was and think I'm still in a state of depression.   But if there is one thing I know!  Nothing will get done if we retreat into our separate camps  and decide that all those who disagree with us are wrong.   Did my protesting make a difference?  No probably not but it sure made me feel a lot better.
