A lot of us will start out the New Years making a list of changes we want to make so we will be happier in our daily lives. Maybe it's eating better, volunteering or getting fit we put on our New Years list but as most of us know that list seems to be forsaken and we go back to our old habits by Spring.
Why is it so hard to stick to our New Years resolution's? We're taught we must succeed at all cost. What we really need to be taught is how to fail successfully. None of us are perfect so all of us are going to fail some of the time. Failure is good at helping us recognize our shortcomings. Admitting those shortcomings is the only way we build resilience and emotional well-being. Without resilience and emotional well-being our self-compassion is nowhere to be found.
Be kind to yourself. Kindness is the engine that drives us to keep trying even when we fail. So this New Years when you inevitably break your resolutions don't beat yourself up. Try being kind to yourself and you will be more likely to succeed the next time you make a New Years list.
