Online Shopping Just Got More Expensive
Last week the United States Supreme Court ruled that States can now require online and out of State retailers to collect sales tax. Previously shoppers were responsible for sending in the sales tax payment but no one did, I sure didn't. The Courts ruling last week overturned a 50 year law. The ruling will force millions of Americans to start paying sales tax on items brought from a company that doesn't have a physical store or distribution center in the State of product purchases. Personally I already pay sales tax on products from Amazon, Walmart and Sam's which are my main online shopping sites. It's those third person sellers that I don't pay taxes on. Those sellers probably amount to 25% to 30% of my online orders. In the last two weeks I've received five online orders and paid sales tax on four of them. Yes it will cost me a little more money every month but the law change is going to be much more of a headache for businesses than for consumers. My shopping habit will not change one bit. What's a few more dollars on the old credit card every month anyway!
