Smart plugs can make the dumbest appliances controllable through the human voice and apps on your phone. Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Home Kit all work pretty good at making a home intelligent. One can turn lights on and off, start the coffee pot, play music, control temperature, water the yard and even control the lights on the Christmas tree.
There are lots of ways to use smart plugs and many brands of smart plugs. Smart plugs cost as little as $5 and can run $40. My plugs are kind of in the middle costing between $15 and $20. Mostly I use them to control lights, appliances and play music. The system I use is a combination of Tp link smart plugs and Amazon Alexa as the controller. Alexa and Tp link have made my home smart. When I'm not issuing commands to turn a light on, play some music or control the temperature in the room, I can ask Alexa a question and the system will usually give me the correct answer faster than greased lightning. As an added plus, Alexa never gets mad when I hollow at it, that's more than I can say for any human I've ever lived with.
A dumb person with a smart home, that's me. A home is a man's castle
