For myself I follow the Dallas Cowboys. I follow their win/loss record, personalities, stats, interviews, coaches, even their stadium. Everything related to the Cowboys is on my radar from August through February. But I also try to single out one other aspect of the league to follow each season.
This year that aspect is a single player who is one of the greatest at his position and this year could be his last. Brett Farve is among the greatest to have ever played the game of football. He joins a select group of Quarterbacks like Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, John Elway, Dan Marino, Bart Star, Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw and Fran Tarkenton. But for the last several years my respect for Mr. Farve has began to wain. His greatness on the field is as good as it has ever been but his playing of the fans, front office and news media has left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
One day he says he is going to retire, the next day he says he might retire. We all get worked up over what his decision might be then a team offers him an unbelievable amount of money to play just one more year and right before the first kick off he is on the field throwing footballs. Mr Farve may say money does not matter but I don't believe that one bit. Imagine that!
I'll say one thing about Brett Farve "He plays the PR game even better that he plays the game of football". If I didn't know better I would say he learned how to play that game from one of the best, Terrell Owens. The master of Bring Your Own Popcorn, Mr Owens is as fast with his words as he is with his legs but rich he is and in one way or another pretty much calls his own shots. All the players make too much money so I guess I should not be picking on a single player but plain and simple this is extortion and the NFL need to put a stop to it. The fans already have to pay outrageous ticket prices at stadiums and just wait until the the cable television and satellite companies demand every one pay extra to watch any football at all. The day will come when there is no football on free over the air broadcast television and that's when enough is enough will be shouted from every tailgate party.
Will Brett Farve have a record setting season? Who knows, anything is possible. The Cowboys could win the Super Bowl but that's about as outlandish a statement as saying Mr Farve is going to throw the winning pass February 6, 2011 in Cowboy stadium during Super Bowl XLV. No matter what kind of season Mr Farve has he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame and I am going to watch him as he travels that road. This could very well be his last year in the league that is if some team doesn't offer him a Zillion dollars to play one more year. My guess is he won't forget his popcorn machine next year.
