We said goodbye to 2010 and hello to 2011. As the New Year begins some of us use the momentum to motivate changes in our lives. Call these changes whatever you want but they are most commonly called New Year's resolutions. If you are the resolution making type, it's always a struggle to find that motivated momentum for the resolution's continuation through out the year. But before you even think about embarking on any of them, consider this fundamental truth; you can't move forward if you're stuck where you are.
If you're like myself you have probably developed some kind of management system for your life. If we did not have at least a few organizational skills nothing would ever get done. I seem to be a little more organized than most, sometime a blessing sometimes a curse! Blessing or curse, everybody lines up on the same starting line when it comes to New Year's resolutions but it does help to have a plan. Just keep in mind the starting line where the Tortoise and the Hare lined up. The Hare thought his momentum would certainly carry him to victory so he charged headstrong with out any type of plan. On the other hand, the Tortoise knew he could never out run the Hare so he devised a plan that insured him victory.
"Obstacles" in life can be challenging. I don't even like the word, it seems so permanent! I prefer to call those barriers "Clutter". It's a lot easier to kick Clutter around. All to often Obstacles seem unmovable. I've never had much of a problem with physical Clutter but mental Clutter sometime keep me from moving forward as fast as I would like to. If there was one thing that would cause me to lose the race against the Hare, it's procrastination. Procrastination has always caused every bit of clutter that blocked my view of the starting line.
Acknowledging that change is necessary is usually the start of most life altering experiences. Focusing on the bigger picture and not getting caught up in the small stuff always helps to get through ruff spots, driving me forward in everything I do. But no matter how big the picture gets, it's still hard to identify all the Clutter because it comes in many forms and it sometimes comes at a ferocious pace. But one thing is for sure, it does not belong in our lives. So stop procrastinating and straighten out that sock drawer. Socks all paired up, no socks with holes, all straggling singles tossed into the trash, aren't you proud of yourself! You've just defeated Clutter and completed your first New Year's resolution.
