Members of Congress make 174,000 dollars a year. During any government shutdown those members will continue to receive their pay checks while hundreds of thousands of federal workers will be left empty handed. Yes the economy is still sputtering, unemployment is too high and the debt is growing. But if a government shutdown was just about disagreement on spending, I think rational heads could prevail. The true reason for any current or future shutdown lies with the Republicans who refuse to budge on their ideological demands. Demands which are largely brought on by the Party's Tea party members. The Republican Party has to resort to policy extortion because they can't get their ideological views on abortion, the environment, and health care passed into law. Views on morality have no place in funding a government that is suppose to be for the people and by the people. I don't push my views on abortion, the environment or health care on anyone and I don't want some rich right wing Tea party beholding bible thumping know it all pushing their views on me.
The public will not be fooled once it sees what the Republicans are really holding out for. The party that would rather take away women's rights, turn this planet into a wasteland and shove the poor into an early grave had better realize that the Tea Party is going to be their downfall. Oh, that partnership might push them to a win in the next election but in the long run it will be their downfall.
A government shutdown is a dangerous game. The discipline of a market economy is the only thing that needs to be followed when funding a government. Legislating morality won't balance the books! If Congress ever shuts down government and triggers a financial crisis they shouldn't just have their pay docked they should be fired by the public they are betraying.
