It seems as though I am always finding pennies, too many pennies. I find them on the pavement in parking lots, the floor of my house, on the ground and even in the my change container as I push them out of the way so I can get to the dimes and quarters. Are pennies worthless? No but the penny is sure a pain in the ass. No one wants the penny any more. You can't put them in parking meters, vending machines or pay phones. I can't think of anything you can put them in except for the change container you keep in your house. The only reason I carry them at all is for a defensive purpose, strictly to avoid getting more of them if a purchase ends in a dreaded 1 or 6.
I will never be one of those who profess we should round off all cash transactions to the nearest 5 cents. If that were to happen they would go after the 5 cents and 10 cents and try to round off everything to the 25 cents. Pennies really don't help commarce, they just add time and inconvenience to every transaction.
What would we do without all the sentiment and nostalgia that goes along with them if they were to disappear? You would never hear "A penny for your thoughts or A penny saved is a penny earned". If "Pennies from Heaven" were true, then every time I dumped a bag full of them into a coin counting machine I would demand the machine send the 8 pennies it charge for counting every $1 in coins, back to heaven. Heaven might be the only place the penny is gladly excepted and even there I'll bet St Peter has a "take a penny leave a penny" dish at the entrance to the Pearlie Gates.
Just as you said,,,,,,penny for your thoughts....
