Anonymous
I've been sober a long time and this month marks another sobriety birthday.for me. There was never a time when I was ashamed of being an alcoholic nor have I ever found the requirement of being anonymous in Alcoholics Anonymous to my liking. Anonymity only helped to perpetuate the shame I always heard about. But a lot of people don't feel the same way. Lots of alcoholics are ashamed and would never go to AA if they knew their sober friends and family knew of their admitting to a problem with alcohol. I do understand the need for protection and would never blame AA for the perpetuation of shame associated Alcoholism. . My behavior when drinking was at times shameful and so were my actions but now I live a sober life. I've been done with being ashamed for a long time. "Hi my name is Brent and I'm an alcoholic"!
