No Joy in Happy Valley

Sanctions have finally been levied against Penn State College for it's failure to stop the predatory sexual behavior by one of their football coaches.   Penn State's leadership including it's president, athletic director and head coach all failed to act when they knew of such despicable  acts.  For fourteen years a sexual predator assaulted victim after victim and nothing was done.
60 million dollars in fines, nullification of all football wins from 1998 through 2011, four years of probation,  four  years of not being able to go to a Bowl game and twenty fewer player scholarships each year for four years.  Those are the penalties imposed by the NCAA but that is just the beginning of the problems for Penn State College.  Since the NCAA acted,  the Big 10 Conference has fined Penn State 3 million dollars and several of the top 50 companies in America have canceled their Television sponsorship  with Penn State.  All this is going to cripple one of the best and most popular football teams in America and well it should.  But no price the NCAA can levy will ever be able to repair the grievous damage that has been done at Penn State Collage.
The College is lucky the NCAA did not expose the death penalty and suspend the football program all together.  Before the next ten years passes, Penn State and it's fans may wish they had taken a quick shot to the head because dying a slow death is going to be much more painful.  Masses of idol-worshiping fans won't be able to cheer for a winner but that will not stop Penn State College from fielding a football team.  Winning at all cost will be replaced by academic achievements.  Football fans all across America will continue to fill stadiums but now they will know that if sorrow can fill a place called Happy Valley it can fill any football stadium on any College campus in America.
