Nerves of a Stranger

The system of higher education in the United States of America takes the smartest people from across the nation and concentrates them in a few privileged places.  Austin Texas happens to be one of those places.   Thirty nine percent of the City's population above the age of 21 has a college degree.   Students enrolling at the University of Texas in Austin can be in for a real culture shock.  Many have been raised in a system of equality but soon find themselves challenged to be more accomplished, enlightened and more cutting edge.  Austin seems to emphasis mobility, multicultural roots and education.  Self-fulfillment is high on the list for many living in Austin, myself included.  Although I have never processed the nerves of a stranger I feel a sense of belonging on my visits to the University of Texas and all the other events I attend in the City of Austin.  For this reason alone I could never return to the place of my birth.  It would simply not be possible.
