Cell Phones rank extremely high on the list of modern irritants. Overhearing peoples phone conversations is a distraction we can't do much about and most of the time we can't get away from. Hearing one person speaking while wondering what the person on the other end of the conversation is saying taxes our brains into a fit of anger. Such a situation draws attention away from whatever else we're doing and makes the task of trying to complete the puzzle almost impossible. Basically our brains are drawn into the conversation because it's too strange to tune out. Such one sided conversations are more distracting and annoying than a dialogue between two nearby people even though both trigger a response we have to deal with.
Hopefully, someday people will start to recognize that it's really rude to force other people to listen to a conversation they're not part of. But until that day comes we will all continue being trapped by annoying conversations. Our only hope is to convince ourselves that's it's only noise, remember to place our phones on vibrate and place our voice on silence some of the times.
