The World Trade center has become known as Ground Zero. As the debate rages on about whether or not to build a Mosque at the location, I can't seem to make up my mind as to how I stand on this issue. Being a defender of religious freedom and all the rights that come with that, it's still a little hard to accept the balance of 3000 American civilians deaths against the right to build such a politically sensitive organization so close to Ground Zero. Everyone needs to try to get along with each other and reducing religious tension by reaching out to all religions is the right thing to do. But building a Mosque at Ground Zero is sure going to rile up a lot of Americans who have fostered ill feelings ever since 9/11.
Expressions of religious freedom is guaranteed under the United States Constitution so the US Government has no right to stop the building of a thirteen story Mosque that will be on private property next to Ground Zero. I never have and never will object to the right of religious expression but that's not what this argument is about. It's about building a symbol of Islamic faith at the doorstep where terrorist in the name of Islam killed 3000 Americans.
Tolerance and sensitivity goes both ways. The insistence in building a Mosque at such a place could and I say could suggest a desire to make a political statement as much as a religious statement. I hope that's not the case but millions of Americans feel Islam as a whole is irredeemable. If the Islamic faith truly wants America to accept their religion and be granted equal powers under the United States Constitution maybe they should respect the sensitivity of such an endeavor. Then and only then will America begin to show Tolerance.
