Some see nature and some hardly see it at all. A tree will move some to tears of joy where others see it only as a green thing that stands in the way. Austin is populated with nature people, people who's ears are tuned and sharpened to detect the music the wind makes when it strikes the branches of such a mighty oak. Austin is also populated by ungrateful people who are like hogs underneath a tree eating acorns but never looking up to see where the acorns came from. There is always a war going on between these two groups but this time the nature people won the battle and one of Austin's huge historic oak trees was saved. This 400000 pound 300 year old majestic oak tree was moved from a hill at the corner of 9th and Neches to the 160 year old First Baptist Church at 901 Trinity.
Just touching the tree's massive 45 inch diameter trunk was truly a moving experience. When I stand under this mighty oak I have such a sense of the passage of time and history. It's as if I am touching the essence, the very substance of life. Experiences like these enforce my belief that there truly is a higher power. In the words of Woody Allen "Only God can make a tree, probably because it's so hard to figure out how to get the bark on".
What better place for a grand old tree to live another 300 years than one of God's own front yards.
Now those old trees you remember I remember to. Especially the one in the yard where the cabin was...Remember that one. Daddy owned 1/3 of that land...did you forget ??
