Finally after many debates and court hearings, the Civil War statues on the South Mall at the University of Texas in Austin have found new resting places. The first to be moved was the statue of Jefferson Davis. Today his statue rest in a less prominent place, UT's Dolph Brisco Center of American History.
Every time the White Nationalist Party stages a rally, the debate rekindles whether or not to remove the hundreds of Civil War statues and memorials all over the United States. Even when a statue or memorial is moved, the debate continues what to do with them. The University of Texas found a happy medium in moving the Jefferson Davis statue to a history center. After all the statues and memorials are part of history and they are pieces of art. Destroying them would be like burning books that you don't agree with.
The real question one should ask themselves when considering their feelings on Civil War statues and memorials is whether they should be displayed at all. Several months ago I visited the Brisco History center to view the Jefferson Davis statue in it's new setting and thought the Center's exhibit of the statue was nicely done.. Don't think it should upset anyone as it is placed in a history and educational setting.
