In Austin we love our Tex-Mex. Enchiladas, queso and tacos are staples for the City. The El Patio Tex-Mex restaurant opened it's doors January 1954. The same family has owned and operated icon from them to the present. Located across from the University of Texas, it has been a must stop for most student. The restaurant has never been a fancy place. It was a place you could get fairly good Tex-Mex for a fairly cheap price. Even today you can get a cheese enchiladas plate for $10. For years, a standard serving of saltine crackers and hot sauce came with every meal but in the mid 90s the saltines disappeared and were replaced with tortilla chips.
Now after 65 years, El Patio is closing it's doors on Aug 9th. The owners say there is really no external factor that lead to the closing, it was simply time for the family to retire from the restaurant business. Before they closed for the last time I had one more plate of their enchiladas. Good by old friend.
